Materials of Ratio Machines: A Commitment to Quality and Safety.
We believe that exceptional design begins with exceptional materials. All Ratio machines are meticulously engineered using high-quality components that ensure durability, safety, and a luxurious brewing experience. These decisions make our category-leading 5 year warranty possible.
We know that material quality and transparency is important to many of you, so here is a rundown of the materials we use in our machines.
The Water Tank: BPA-Free Clarity and Purity
All Ratio machines have a cold water tank made from Eastman Tritan TX2001, a BPA-free co-polymer plastic. Tritan has undergone extensive third-party laboratory testing to confirm its chemical safety, ensuring it contains no bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S, or other bisphenol compounds. Additionally, it is free from estrogenic and androgenic activity, making it a safe and reliable material for food and beverage applications. We only use 100% new virgin plastics so there is no concern of other materials being used. The shatter-resistant nature of Tritan also adds durability to the reservoir, providing peace of mind with every brew. There is no hot water contact with all of our machine's water tanks.
Water Lines: Preserving Taste with Borosilicate Glass
The Ratio Eight and Six use handblown borosilicate glass for the hot water lines. Borosilicate glass is known for its durability and resistance to thermal shock, ensuring that water quality remains uncompromised as it moves through the brewing system. This choice of material prevents any potential contamination from plastic leaching, keeping your coffee pure and unaltered. The Ratio Four uses FDA-grade silicone water lines due to its compact size.
Shower Head: Stainless Steel for Full Extraction
The wide shower head on all Ratio machines is constructed of stainless steel, with an exclusive design that uses a spiral pattern. The shower head is responsible for evenly distributing water over the coffee grounds and is the final exit point for the hot water before hitting the bed of coffee grounds. This ensures both longevity and consistent performance, delivering optimal extraction for a balanced and flavorful cup of coffee.
Heating Element: Efficient Metal Construction
All Ratio machines use a pure aluminum heating element that provides efficient and rapid heat transfer to achieve ideal brewing temperatures. This choice ensures consistent heating performance, delivering hot water at the optimal temperature for coffee extraction. There are no coatings that can flake off after lots of use.
Water Line Connectors: FDA-Grade Silicone for Food Safety and No Leaks
To maintain the highest food safety standards, all Ratio machines utilize FDA-grade silicone for water line connectors. This material is carefully selected to prevent any unwanted interaction between the water and other components, preserving both the taste and quality of your brew. These are also designed to accommodate the jostling that happens in shipping and with normal use.
Ratio Eight Base and Top: Precision Die-Cast Aluminum
The base and top of the Ratio Eight are formed from die-cast aluminum and coated with non-toxic, food-safe finishes. This construction not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the machine but also ensures stability and durability over years of use.
Ratio Six Base and Top: Formed Stainless Steel
The Ratio Six is formed of a precision-stamped stainless steel body ensuring durability along with the perfect finish on both white and matte black color options.
Ratio Four Base and Top: Matte finish polymer with reinforced metal internal structure
The polymer we’ve chosen is extremely durable with frequent coffee brewing sessions and is easy to wipe down.
Our Approach to Plastics: Safety Above All
At Ratio, we understand that some customers prefer to minimize plastic in their homes, while others appreciate the consistency and heat retention benefits of high-quality polymers. When we incorporate plastic into our designs, we use only BPA-free polymers from reputable manufacturers such as Eastman and 3M. The small BPA-free polysulfone component in the Ratio Eight and Six, located where cold water enters the heating element, was specifically chosen for its ability to maintain a water-tight seal while accommodating countless cycles of metal expansion and contraction.
All plastics used in Ratio products are 100% new virgin plastics, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards. Additionally, our black plastics are free from harmful fire-retardant chemicals such as BDE-209, further reinforcing our commitment to material safety.
Minimizing Plastic Exposure: Alternative Options
For those looking to reduce plastic exposure, we offer swappable brewing accessories. The Ratio Eight ceramic dripper and stainless steel thermal carafe provides a natural, aesthetically pleasing option for brewing, and it can be used with the Ratio Six. You may also use the Ratio Eight glass carafe on the Ratio Six to get the same minimal plastic exposure as the Eight. For the Ratio Four, we designed the borosilicate glass carafe to accommodate a variety of other filters on the market, such as Origami small and large, Hario V60 01, and Kalita Wave 185.
A Thoughtful Approach to Craftsmanship
All Ratio machines are designed with a meticulous selection of materials to ensure the best possible coffee experience. Because all machines are backed by our best of class 5 year warranty, we choose materials for aesthetics, performance, and longevity.
