The life aquatic with Kailyn Provin
Tell us about the entrepreneurial and/or creative background of your childhood.
As a child, my parents always pushed my brothers and I to compete. Whether it was in our sport of choice or during Junior Lifeguards in the summer, we were always up in the morning and participating in activities that kept us engaged both mentally and physically. I think that’s where my entrepreneurial drive comes from.
What experiences/mentors/inputs have shaped your life (and/or business) perspective the most?
What’s your favorite thing about being on water?
When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused. Every time I stand before a beautiful beach, its waves seem to whisper to me: If you choose the simple things and find joy in nature’s simple treasures, life and living need not be so hard. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace. -Rainer Maria Rilke, Poet
What are the current charter locations/times/details available?
We currently have four boats available for charter: The Por Vida, located in Redondo Beach, the Catallac, located in Avalon, Catalina Island, and two yachts located in Marina Del Rey, The Duchess and The Legend.
The Catallac is a forty-nine-passenger yacht in Avalon, Catalina Island that includes a licensed captain and has countless charter options: private charters, cocktail cruises, weddings, island tours, memorials, fishing charters and the well known flying fish tours! Catalina Island is the secret gem of Southern California. To me, it resembles Positano, Italy. Beautiful, multi-colored homes, crystal clear turquoise water, and countless things to do. It’s the perfect weekend getaway and chartering the Catallac allows you to take in the gorgeous views that can only be fully absorbed by being on the water. In Catalina, you feel as though you’re halfway across the world, but in reality you’re only 25 miles off the California coast.
Why Ratio?
Coffee is the very first thing I wake up to every morning, and I truly believe that something you use every day is something worth investing in. Ratio’s design is what initially caught my eye—I’ve never seen a coffee machine that had such a unique design. I love the element of the wood; coffee pots these days don’t have that modern feel, and we consider ours to be the centerpiece of our galley and kitchen at home. We chose the walnut wood as it has a nautical feel and fit the interior of our boat. Aside from the design, the brew itself is remarkable. We enjoy a strong cup of coffee, and Ratio is by far the best coffee pot we’ve ever owned on our boat or at home.
Tell us about Ratio on the boat! We’ve yet to enjoy a brew cycle on the open seas!
Ratio joined us during our Annual Marlin Fishing Tournament. The tournament takes place each year in the waters surrounding Catalina Island.. Each of the 45 boats that entered have the same goal: catch and release the most Marlin, all while dressed up in the tournaments chosen theme: Hawaiin. For the first time, we took first place in the tournament! We caught and released two Marlin back to back shortly after having our second round of coffee. Considering the crew was fueled by Ratio’s brew, it’s safe to say our morning coffee contributed to our success!
Tell us more about the blog you’ll be launching. What type of content can we expect?
I am ecstatic to launch my personal blog this quarter called The Honest Compass. I’ll blog about everything from products and services I recommend, to hikes, recipes, travel tips, journal entries from my Europe trip, business advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, and much more. I hope to use my personal blog to share my life and hopefully influence others to do more with theirs.
